Students intern through Senior Seminar at East Rockaway HS

Posted

As part of the Senior Seminar program at East Rockaway High School, students got the chance to work two days a week to see what it’s like in the “real world.”

Some students came away with more assurance of the path they would like to take. Others found out that that career may not be what they expected. Either way, it was a great learning experience for all of the teens.

The students interned at the Herald newspapers, Peak Performance of Lynbrook, Holiday inn Express of Lynbrook and Rockville Centre, Rhame Avenue and Centre Avenue schools, Scott Stone, Attorney at Law offices, and South Shore Dental. The programs coordinators are Russell Pajer and Ginny Sievers.

“Our Senior Seminar program affords students the opportunity to either participate in an internship or pursue a service learning project,” said Sievers. “Either choice allows students the chance to guide their own learning experience.  This program is designed to help students transition from the traditional high school setting to their next step in life, whether that be college or career.”

Typically, students leave school two afternoons a week during their final semester to shadow a professional in their chosen field. To prepare, students write resumes and experience “mock” interviews. They are prepped for everything from shaking hands properly to dressing for success. The culmination of the program is the Senior Seminar Fair.
