In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to raise funds for student scholarships, Joseph Satriano, trustee of The Susan Satriano Memorial Foundation, is hosting a “Walk of Lights” walk-a-thon on Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. (rain date, October 29) at the Oceanside High School track, 3160 Skillman Ave.

The event will feature an evening marked by illuminated gold or pink bags that will light up the high school field as walkers make their way around the track. Festivities also include live bands, courtesy of Oceanside High School students, singer/songwriter, Flora Midwood, face painting, balloon art, holiday shopping, exhibitor tables, food and refreshments, raffle prizes, a 50/50 raffle, and fun for all ages. The cost is $20 per walker; children 10 and under are free. Walkers may also raise the $20 fee through sponsorships from relatives and/or friends.

Satriano, who goes by the pen name J.S. Russo, is the author of the inspirational book, In Sickness and in Health: A Memoir of Love. The book chronicles the family’s journey and passion for life and was written in tribute to his late wife, Susan, who battled breast cancer for 13 years. He founded The Susan Satriano Memorial Foundation five years ago to provide high school seniors with scholarships when a parent has suffered with cancer. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $130,000 to more than 130 students on Long Island and around the country. In 2011, the foundation awarded $75,000 in scholarships to 83 students across the nation, including Oceanside and 24 additional districts on Long Island. The foundation is funded by donations from family, friends, businesses and from the net proceeds from Satriano’s book sales.

For additional information, sponsorships or to register for the “Walk of Lights,” please call the Oceanside Department of Community Activities (DOCA) at 516-594-2336 or Satriano at 516-603-5520. Sponsorships are still available; sponsorships, at $300, $200 or $100 offer various incentives, including sponsorship announcements during the event, sponsorship names displayed on large board at the event and in publicity materials, the opportunity to exhibit at vendor tables, and more. All proceeds from the event will benefit The Susan Satriano Memorial Foundation. For additional information about the foundation, please visit www.susansatrianofoundation.com.
