Baldwin Public Library kicks off summer reading programs

Posted

“Dive Into Summer Reading: Oceans of Possibilities” reading programs started on June 11 at a kickoff event at Baldwin Public Library. The library is offering three clubs for the summer, where through reading you can enter to earn prizes, enter raffles and much more. Programs start for those grades one through six, then six through twelfth, and finally ages 18 and up.

“This event was just the beginning,” said library director Elizabeth Olesh. “The library will offer an ocean’s worth of fun all summer for readers of all ages.”

Registration for the summer reading club for children grade one through six began on June 6 and is still open. Reporting begins June 27 and ends August 13. In order for children to earn raffle tickets they much report their hours read to the library by contacting the Children’s Deck or filling out this online review: baldwinpl.ny08.readsquared.com/.

Prizes are given to children after reading and reporting their first, tenth, and twentieth hour read. Readers will receive a raffle ticket for every hour read and the grand prize winner will receive a Nintendo Switch Lite, to be announced on August 22.

The Children’s Department will be having an Art Show throughout July and August in the Library’s atrium. Each week in July the library will introduce a new technique that you can use to create your artwork. All materials will be included and available while supplies last. This is a drop-in and in-person program. You must be registered for Summer Reading Club or Read-to-Me Club in order to participate.

For teens from grade six to twelfth, reporting begins Saturday June 25 and end on August 10. Teens can earn raffle tickets for reviewing materials, attending library programs, and volunteering. Raffle tickets will go towards winning gift certificates. If you earn ten raffle tickets, you can enter to win the grand prize: Apple AirPod Pro headphones. If you are entering sixth grade, you may choose to be a member of both the Children’s and the Teens’ Summer Reading Clubs.

Reviews of books, eBooks & audiobooks are worth five raffle tickets each. More info about our eBooks and audiobooks here: baldwinpl.org/ebooks-landing-page. Reviews of TV shows/movies, podcasts, music albums, and video games are worth four raffle tickets each.

Attending a teen library program, volunteering, and submitting a video for the Teen Video Challenge are worth three tickets each (for community service programs please visit the library’s website). After reporting, go to the Teen Zone to choose which prize you would like to submit your raffle tickets towards. You may choose one prize for all your tickets or split your raffle tickets for different prizes. Once you have earned ten raffle tickets you may enter for a chance to win AirPod Pro headphones. You may re-enter every 10 raffle tickets.

For adults, register, read a book, write a short review, and submit it and be entered in a raffle after reading one, three and six books. Book reviews began June 8, and the submission deadline is August 12. Certain events at the library will only be open to members of the adult summer reading club, check on baldwinpl.org/src-adults/ to find out more.
