Community members, elected officials and members of the South Baldwin Jewish Center gathered outside the community menorah on Dec. 10 to mark the first night of Hanukkah.

Nassau County Executive and Baldwinite Laura Curran attended the celebration, as did State Assemblywoman Judy Griffin and Hempstead Town Councilman Chris Carini.

The group of people gathered near the Baldwin Long Island Rail Road station near the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Grand Avenue.

Rabbi Royi Shaffin, of the South Baldwin Jewish Center, symbolically lit the first candle with the shamash and attendees sang traditional songs.

Ginny Foley, of the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, and members of Hangout One Happy Place in Baldwin also joined the holiday festivities.

“May the lights of Channukah light the way into a new year free of Covid and and a return to life as we used to know it,” SBJC representatives wrote on Facebook after the event.
