Bellmore fire commissioner election to be held Dec. 8

The time has come once again for Bellmore Fire District residents to choose their new commissioner on Dec. 8.

Polls will open Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bellmore Fire Department Headquarters (230 Pettit Ave.), across from the Long Island Rail Road. Two candidates are up for the top spot; the next commissioner will serve a five-year term starting Jan. 1, 2021.

Note: Only residents of the Bellmore Fire District who are registered with the Nassau County Board of Elections are eligible to vote.

Below are bios of the candidates to help you make an informed decision.

Peter Schmalenberger

  • Lifelong resident of Bellmore
  • Member of the Bellmore Fire Department for more than 35 years
  • Served in the Chief’s Office from 1998 to 2003, and from 2017 to 2019
  • Current Financial Secretary for Bellmore Engine Hose Co. No. 1
  • Third generation of family in the Bellmore Fire Department

Joseph Occhipinti

  • Bellmore resident for more than 35 years
  • Active member of Bellmore Fire Department for 30 years
  • Previously held positions of Commissioner, Lieutenant and Captain
  • Active member of the Bellmore Fire Exempt organization
  • Currently a trustee of West End Co. No. 3
