The Village of Malverne held their annual candlelit 9/11 ceremony on Church Street last Friday. Families of 9/11 victims, who were joined by local elected officials, held candles throughout the ceremony as they reflected on the Sept. 11 attacks 19 years ago.

“As we come together this evening, we’re reminded of so many individuals in the community who continue to come forward to stand by each other,” said Malverne Mayor Keith Corbett, who emceed the event.

County Executive Laura Curran spoke about what 9/11 means to many families, and how it affected the country in numerous ways.

“For so many of us, that morning was a story of loss,” Curran said. “It was also a loss of innocence. So while we come together to think about what we lost as a country . . . it’s also important to remember what it is that we still have, and that’s a beautiful place to live, and a wonderful country with freedoms that we should not take for granted.”
