Car crashes through Lynbrook storefront

A four-car accident on Merrick Road near Taft Avenue in Lynbrook caused one of the vehicles to jump the curb and crash into the window of a storefront, trapping the driver inside the car. Although the store was still open for business, no employees were hurt inside.

Lynbrook police and firefighters responded to the scene at 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 1. One of the vehicles in the accident, a Mercedes, jumped the curb and smashed into the storefront window of House of Beauty, at 541 Merrick Road. The car was wedged in the window with the driver’s door blocked by the sidewalk street lamppost.

Firefighters and police officers teamed up to push the vehicle back a few feet so the driver could climb out. Under the command of Chief Michael Brooks, they then removed the store’s smashed window and its framing so that a tow truck could pull the vehicle back out.

Merrick Road had to be closed in the area and traffic was diverted into the residential streets during the call.  All those involved in the accident refused medical treatment. Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.
