A 71-year-old from St. Albans, Queens, was arrested on Christmas for attempting to murder a man in Elmont.

According to Nassau County police, John Thorpe got into a verbal argument with a 66-year-old male inside Ebony Cards and Gifts. Thorpe then exited the store and retrieved a knife from his car, and when he returned, police said, Thorpe stabbed the 66-year-old in the neck, causing a deep cut, substantial pain, swelling and bleeding. The victim was then transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

When police arrived on the scene at 3:55 p.m., they said, Thorpe flailed his arms in an attempt to prevent them from placing him into custody. He eventually complied with the officers’ demands, and was placed under arrest.

Thorpe is charged with second-degree attempted murder, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 26 at the First District Court in Hempstead.
