Strict policies enforced for school registration

September is here and for most parents, it signals one thing: the kids are going back to school. Registration for elementary school districts 13 and 24, as well for the high school district, are under way at Memorial Junior High School. School officials say they expect to register at least of 500 students.

According to Nick Luciano, residency officer for the three districts, children need to get re-registered for school in third, seventh and 10th grades. Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and ends on Sept. 4. Luciano said the district hosts registration at Memorial to make it more convenient for parents. “Rather than having to go to several different places, it’s easier to have it in one place,” Luciano said. “You’re not running around.”

To avoid wasting time, Luciano said parents should have all the necessary notarized documents before they come in to register their child for school: proof of residency, their child’s last report card, immunization paperwork and their child’s birth certificate. “If you don’t have something, don’t bother coming in,” he said. “You’re going to need to make a second trip. If you bring in everything we need, it expedites the process.”

The 13-page registration form takes about 20 minutes to complete, he said, and the district has Mandarin Chinese and Spanish translators on-hand to help non-English speaking parents. Even if a child is illegally in this country, but lives in Valley Stream, Luciano said, the school will educate them. “We take everybody, they just have to live in Valley Stream,” he said.

If a child is not registered by October, Luciano said, the district starts sending letters to their homes. If the district does not receive a response, Luciano said they call Child Protective Services. He added that the district investigates students who they think may not live in the village, but attends district schools. Luciano noted he often makes house visits while investigating a case.

Last year, Luciano said the districts withdrew 64 students who were attending Valley Stream schools, but didn’t live in the community.
