Elmont PTAs celebrate 123 years

To commemorate the 123rd anniversary of three women banding together to form the National Parent Teachers Association, PTA members from all six Elmont elementary schools held their annual Founders’ Day celebration on Feb. 6.

The event featured performances by Elmont students, speeches about the importance of a PTA and an awards ceremony. Anna Antonelli received the Founders Day Award, and May Jane Havrylkoff received the PTA Recognition Award.

Havrylkoff’s house burned down a few days before Christmas and was condemned. The Dutch Broadway School employee and her family are now living in a temporary home in Williston Park. At a recent Board of Education meeting, she thanked the Elmont community for supporting her family through the rebuilding process, saying, “Elmont has been with me every step of the way.”
