Former Rockville Centre resident dies at age 94

Charles ‘Mac’ E. McTiernan, Sr., 94, died peacefully on March 21 in Jacksonville, Fla. after contracting pneumonia. Born in New York City on April 23, 1917 to Edward and Mary Ellen Dolan, Mac earned an Engineering degree from University of Alabama and a Law degree from The George Washington University Law School. He married Theresa Augusta ‘Gus’ Follmar on Sept. 11, 1943. She pre-deceased him on Nov. 18, 1999.

Mac was a devoted husband and father who was very active in the community and church. He was a World War II veteran who attained the rank of captain. Mac was a CYO basketball coach, Rockville Centre Little League commissioner, and a Cub Scout leader. He had a long and successful career with IBM as a patent attorney in New York City; Tokyo, Japan, Lexington, Ky. and Valhalla, N.Y. He was also a vice president of Sperry Rand’s UNIVAC’s patent and licensing services division, where he was involved in issues dealing with the initial patents in the electronic digital computer industry. He is published in the IEEE Annals of the History of Computing Vol. 20 No. 2 (The ENIAC Patent). An avid traveler and golfer, he and enjoyed listening to the music from the 40s and 50s. He had a dry but very witty sense of humor. He stressed the meaning and value of family to everyone and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.  He especially loved children, and would frequently talk to them in restaurants and give them a quarter.

  Mac is survived by his brother James W. McTiernan of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Gorman of Seminole, Fla. and Marie ‘Celine’ Johnson (Dick) of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; six children, Charles E. McTiernan, Jr. (Barbara) and William J. McTiernan  (Barbara J. Larkin), both of Jacksonville, Fla., Barbara A. Isabella (Jay) of Rockville Centre, Christine Dahl (Drew) of Freeport, Fla., Patricia A. Buonaiuto (James) of Kings  Mountain, N.C., and Timothy McTiernan (Maria) of Douglasville, Ga.; 13 grandchildren,  Michael McTiernan (Kimi), Christopher McTiernan (Leah), Stephen McTiernan (Maryanne), Jill McTiernan (Freddy), Lauren McTiernan (Jeff), Joseph Isabella (Jeanine), Edward Isabella (Elizabeth), Alecia Dahl, Andrew Dahl III, Alexander Dahl, Avery Dahl, Cassandra Buonaiuto, Liam McTiernan; 6 great grandchildren, Molly Isabella, Ryan Isabella, Colin Isabella, Vivian Isabella, Lachlan Isabella, Abigail McTiernan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

  A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. on April 21 at 12:30 p.m. Mac will be interred at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Prep, 6100 Francis Lewis Blvd, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365, Attn: Nancy DeStefano or to a charity of your choice.
