A Meadow Elementary School teacher on Monday found a loaded handgun in a student’s backpack, the Nassau County Police Department said. The NCPD said a lunch aide at the school saw a 10-year-old boy and his friend playing with a backpack that contained a heavy object. Once the aide looked inside the bag, they found the gun.

The student, whose name has not been made public, was brought to the principal's office and later charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds. The boy will be back in family court on April 5.

The Baldwin school district in a statement said, "The safety of our students and staff is always a top priority in the Baldwin School District. Our staff was made aware of the occurrence and the police were notified, and the situation was rectified immediately. Due to the confidentiality laws, we cannot disclose any further details."

NBC News reported the gun may have been taken from someone connected to the student's mother.
