Happy Homecoming for Hewlett

From the parade down Broadway that began at Hewlett Elementary School and ended at the Hewlett High campus to the halftime events and the winning football game against Conference III and Five Towns rival Lawrence; it was a happy Homecoming for the Hewlett-Woodmere school community on Sept. 21.

Zion Blackman rushed for a pair touchdowns — 77 and 50 yards — and gained 168 yards overall as the Hewlett Bulldogs (2-0) defeated Lawrence 24-7. The Golden Tornadoes are 0-2. Defense also played a big part as Avi Fayer recorded nine tackles and a sack; Oren Schmuel notched a half dozen tackles and recovered the fumble caused by Mark Winkler who had five tackles and an interception.

Festivities included a superhero run for all kindergarten through fifth grade students who wore superhero or Star Wars character costumes, homecoming banners, the royal court, the matching band and color guard, along with the cheerleaders.
