Long Beach beaches re-open after two sharks are spotted 200 yards off shore

Long Beach Wednesday closed all of its beaches after two blacktip sharks were spotted about 200 years off shore, city officials said.

An off-duty lifeguard spotted the sharks, and their presence was confirmed soon after by on duty lifeguards, said John McNally, a spokesman for the city.

The beaches were closed at about 1:30 pm and re-opened at about 3 pm, McNally said.

Blacktip sharks range from 4 to 8 feet long, and spend much of the year in Florida before heading north to cooler waters.

Last week, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said at a press conferene that several sharks had been spotted in waters off Nassau County. She said county marine and aviation units would be on “enhanced” patrol.

There have been no reports of shark attacks on swimmers.
