Garden City police arrested a man after he allegedly fled a single-car crash scene that resulted in one death early Sunday, Feb. 9.
The car crashed into a tree at the intersection of Stewart Avenue and Nassau Boulevard just before 5 a.m., and a rear passenger suffered “severe body trauma.” The passenger, who was identified as Marco Antonio Zuniga, 27, of Long Beach, was transferred to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the driver, Christian Velasquez-Gelano, 28, also of Long Beach, fled the scene on foot and was later arrested. Velasquez-Gelano was charged with driving while intoxicated, multiple counts of vehicular manslaughter and driving without an interlock device.
He will be arraigned in Hempstead on Feb. 10.
