People of all ages gathered around the greenhouse at Crossroads Farm in Malverne to see Malverne Mel make his annual prognostication on Feb. 2.

With cloudy skies and the temperature in the mid-30s, Malverne Mel saw his shadow, which means he predicts six more weeks of winter. Malverne Mayor Keith Corbett made the announcement to the crowd, and drew some cheers from residents who wanted to enjoy an extended winter season.

Residents warmed up for more six more weeks of winter with hot chocolate and light refreshments from the Malverne Civic Association, and the Banjo Rascals provided music throughout the morning. In addition the village’s annual Groundhog Day poster contest featured colorful depictions what students wanted Malverne Mel to prognosticate.
