More snow covers Oceanside and Island Park

Just weeks after a big storm dumped more than a foot of snow on most of the south shore, another blizzard snowed residents in on Friday.

Heavy wind and rain gave way to snow late Thursday that continued into Friday, with forecasters predicting between six and fourteen inches of accumulation by the time the storm is through. Oceanside and Island Park schools closed Friday due to the weather. Scattered snow showers are expected through Saturday.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray declared a snow emergency Friday. "Our town is continuing its proactive practice of having deployed salt spreaders on the road at the first sign of snow," Murray said in a press release. She said the town will make use of more than 200 plows and salters to continue clearing the roads. Residents are urged to avoid driving and stay at home, as the wintry mix is expected to create icy roads and dangerous driving conditions, especially in the evening hours.

Oceanside and Island Park residents made the best of the situation. Some were out early shoveling their driveways and sidewalks to keep up with the steady stream of snow, and some kids headed out to play in the winter wonderland as soon as they heard school was canceled.
