A Few Clouds Nassau County cooling center open at Grant Park in Hewlett
Town of Hempstead beach hours extended to 7 p.m.
As temperatures are expected to rise into the 90s with high humidity the next few days, Nassau County has four cooling centers open, including the one at Grant Park, 1625 Broadway in Hewlett, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through July 21.
The county’s Health Department also advises that checking on relatives and friends, especially the elderly, should be done; increase the time spent in an air-conditioned environment, drink fluids, especially water; avoid beverages that contain alcohol, caffeine and sugar as that leads to dehydration; take cool baths; and people with chronic illnesses should refrain from physical activity, avoid being alone and keep their sleeping area well ventilated.
Eat light, but nutritious foods, avoid the sun at the hottest times of the day and wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothing.
The other cooling centers are at Cantiague Park, 480 West John Street in Hicksville, Mitchel Field Complex, 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd in Uniondale and Wantagh Park Community Center, 1 King Road in Wantagh.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen announced that town beaches will remain open an extra hour in order to accommodate an anticipated influx of residents and visiting beachgoers looking to stay cool this weekend. The hours will be extended until 7 p.m. from Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21.
The town operates eight beaches along the South Shore of Nassau County: Atlantic Beach Estates, East Atlantic Beach, Harbor Isle Beach, Hewlett Point Park, Lido Beach Town Park, Lido West Town Park , Town Park at Point Lookout and Town Park at Sands.
