Oceanside School District to host Universal Pre-K lottery

Posted

The Oceanside School District recently released questions and answers regarding its Universal Pre-K program, which can be seen below:

What is UPK?

UPK stands for Universal Pre-Kindergarten which is a state funded grant that is given to a district. Parents and/or caregivers may choose, but are not required, to enroll their child in a UPK program.

Who is eligible to register for UPK?

An “eligible child” is defined as a resident child who was born between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2017.

Can all interested children attend?

No, unfortunately, the grant is limited and can only be used for a predetermined amount of students. Oceanside has been granted slots for 118 students.

How will the eligible children be selected?

Participants are chosen through a lottery system. Any family that applies and has a completed registration packet will be placed in the lottery. When all available spots for the UPK have been drawn, the remaining applicants will be placed on a waiting list.

How do I register to be considered for the lottery?

A completed registration packet is the requirement to be placed in the lottery.  The registration link can be found on the district website. The central registration contact person is Phyllis Amisano, who can be reached at (516) 678-6238 if you have specific registration questions.

Where will UPK be held?

The UPK program will be held at the School No. 6 complex. It is possible that some of the available seats (out of 118) may be located in one of the local community based organizations that meet state requirements.

When will the program be run?

The UPK program at School No. 6 will follow the same calendar as the district’s kindergarten through 12th grade schedule. The hours will be from 9:20 a.m. to 2:20 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Will meals be provided?

Students can receive a daily breakfast/snack and a lunch. Mealtime will be seen as a positive experience for each child and part of the instructional day.  Parents are permitted to send in their child’s preferred snack and/or lunch.

Is transportation provided?

Transportation is not provided for the UPK program.

If a child has an IEP, can they receive their services at the UPK?

Yes.

What is the teacher to student ratio for UPK?

One certified teacher, one aide and a maximum of eighteen students.
