Police medic struck pedestrian in Elmont

A pedestrian is in critical condition after he was struck by a police ambulance at the intersection of School Road and Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont on July 22 at 8:16 p.m.

According to Nassau County police, a police medic was responding to an “aided case” and was driving a police department ambulance with his lights and sirens activated when he made a right turn from School Road onto Hempstead Turnpike. He then struck a 26-year-old male pedestrian who was attempting to cross the street.

As a result of the crash, police said, the pedestrian suffered a head injury and was transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The investigation into this accident is ongoing.
