Rose P. O’Hare, known as "Nanny," died unexpectedly on Oct. 13, in her Rockville Centre home. She was 73.

Rose was born in County Monaghan, Ireland and immigrated to New York in 1962 with her husband, John. After raising her family in Astoria and losing her husband 16 years ago, she moved to Rockville Centre eight years ago to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Along with being a proud grandmother of 11, nine of whom lived in town (ranging in age from 2 to 17), she was “Nanny” to all the children in the neighborhood. Every school event, parade, soccer game or ballet recital had Nanny in the audience or on the side lines for her grandchildren and all their friends.

Rose was an active member of the Sandel Center, where she enjoyed spending time with her friends, keeping active with yoga, Pilates, jewelry making and so much more. Rose attended St. Agnes Cathedral every day and was a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She was always looking to get involved and help others. She volunteered her time at the Mercy Hospital gift shop every Saturday, made sandwiches for the homeless shelter and was a Senior Pen Pal to Wilson 3rd grade class members. Never forgetting her roots, Rose remained active and was a longtime member of the Monaghan Society, a group she joined almost 50 years ago, which kept her in touch with other Irish immigrants she met when she first came to this

country.

Rose is described as a unique and loving person who will leave a huge void in many people’s lives, especially her loving family and countless friends.

Rose is survived by her loving children: Margaret and husband, Patrick McGuire; Jackie and husband, Seamus Kerr; Michael and wife,Geraldine Gunn and Elizabeth and husband, Kevin O’Sullivan. Her loving grandchildren are John and Morgan McGuire; Ryan, James and Nicole Kerr; Shelby, Bailey, Brooke and Michael O’Hare and Katie and Tommy O’Sullivan.

Rose's children said they'd like to thank all who helped them through this difficult time. The outpouring of prayers, love and support was greatly appreciated. They wish to thank all those who shared their time and memories, sent Mass cards, cooked meals, delivered beautiful flowers or made donations in Rose’s memory. Special thanks to Niall and Kathleen Gunn of Monaghan’s Restaurant for not only taking care of all their needs at home and in the restaurant, but for their love and support. Rose's family also asks everyone to accept this acknowledgement as a token of their gratitude and appreciation.

The family received friends on Oct. 14 and 15 at Thomas A. Glynn Funeral Home on Lincoln Avenue. The Mass of Christian Burial for Rose O’Hare was held on Oct. 16 at St. Agnes Cathedral. Donations in Rose’s memory can be sent to the Rockville Centre St. Patrick's Parade Committee, 265 Sunrise Highway, Suite 1-350, Rockville Centre, NY 11570.
