Science research success in Malverne

Posted

Eighth-graders in Shannon Kelly’s science research class from Malverne’s Howard T. Herber Middle School recently participated in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair’s Broadcom Masters Middle School Competition. The competition was the culmination of their work, which began in the fall with students developing projects that followed the precepts of scientific and engineering design.
Projects ranged from studies on the impact of centrifugal force on plant growth to the possibilities of perpetual motion. Topics of study included sugar and Vitamin C content in fruit juices, relative degrees of teeth stain by common beverages, the efficacy of whitening toothpastes, factors impacting the rate of rot in fruit and the impact of light color on plant growth.
Two groups of students were honored at the event: Adam Akaeze, Nelson Crawford and Niles Wilson received honorable mention for their project investigating the impact of fertilizers on plant growth; and Sabrina Ramharakh, Jamila Smith and Farvens Ulysse were awarded first place for their investigation into the relative absorbency of different paper towels. This is the first time Malverne students have received first-place recognition at LISEF.
