Launched in 2018 as a pilot program, the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach’s Shaar Lev program that teaches Judaic studies to children from the Lawrence School District who have unique learning needs has grown to having 34 student from kindergarten to eighth grade this school year.

On opening day, students made sukkah decorations for Sukkot and sang in the HALB sukkah led by Rabbi Benji Renov. They were also joined by HALB’s Bnei Akiva girls, Shira and Ahuva. Shaar Lev combines the Hebrew words shaar, meaning gateway, and lev, for heart.

To better serve the record number of students, Shaar Lev staff has expanded to include Rabbi Dan Marciano, Rabbi Moish Steinberg and Chaya Hyman, who have joined Rabbi Dovid Libman, Rabbi Eli Herzberg, Tamar Mosak and Batsheva Milworn.
