Spiriting toward an activity-packed Battle of the Classes

Posted

On the first Monday after February break, the mood among students is not commonly one of excitement. However, this week, students were smiling on the way into Hewlett High School as they were excited for the final Spirit Week of the year to begin.

Monday was pajama day, where students were found walking the hallways in slippers, pajama pants and other comfortable attire. Tuesday’s theme was America Day; Wednesday’s theme was wacky Wednesday, where seniors dressed in wacky and neon clothes and underclassmen dressed in black; Thursday’s was Hewlett spirit day. On Friday, students will wear clothing corresponding to their themes in preparation for Friday’s Battle of the Classes, formerly known as Sports Night.

The theme for this year’s Battle of the Classes is decades; freshmen are the 1970s, sophomores are the 1980s, juniors are the 1990s, and seniors are the 2000s. Battle of the Classes will feature many of the same events as in years past, such as volleyball and hockey, this year.

New events this year include dodge ball and knockout (which is replacing the usual 3-on-3 basketball). Nearly each event  is split into a male and a female heat. There is also musical chairs for Student Council officers and an Academic Bowl. Each grade can have up to 10 students take part in the Academic Bowl.

Each grade also paints a banner and choreographs a dance to perform at Battle of the Classes. The dance is considered one of the biggest events of the night, and it is typically the last event of the evening. Not only is the event a great experience for the students involved and a bonding experience for each grade, but also the event raises money for the Adam Barsel scholarship. Adam was a Hewlett High sophomore student who died in a car accident in 2000.

This event serves as a great way to remember Adam and raise money for the scholarship named in his honor. Students across all grades are excited for the event, as there is the opportunity for every student to get involved if they choose. The event is expected to be a great success this year, especially because of the new activities added. At the end of the night, one grade will be crowned as the winner of the Battle of the Classes, a huge honor that will certainly be a great memory for many Hewlett High School students.
