Longtime Rockville Centre resident Steven Cogan died at his home on March 7 from pancreatic cancer. He was 68.

Cogan had lived in Rockville Centre with his wife, Louise, for 38 years. Cogan, a life-long pediatrician, had a long-standing practice in Lynbrook.

Cogan met his wife, who was then Louise Becker, in Boston in 1970. Cogan was finishing his residency at Boston University and Louise was a teacher in the schools. The two were married on April 25, 1971.

He served in the Navy as a pediatrician, working at the Naval hospital at Annapolis.

After moving to Long Island, Cogan joined the pediatric practice of a physician in Malverne. When that man died, Cogan started his own practice in Lynbrook, where he stayed until he retired in May, 2012 due to his illness.

Cogan was the former Director of Pediatrics and Chairman of the Medical Board of Franklin Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream. He had appointments to the faculty of Mercy Medical Center, Long Island Jewish Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, Winthrop University Hospital and South Nassau Communities Hospital. He was also active in many local medical societies.

“He had a great sense of humor,” Louise said. “When he retired, we had so many letters his patients wrote saying they were sorry he retired and the children actually liked to go to his office because he’d have some kind of funny joke. And the parents all wrote that he made them all feel that the children were well taken care of and they really felt they were in the best of hands. The children drew him pictures.

“It was just amazing,” she added. “I had no idea how much he meant to some of these families.”

Cogan is survived by his wife, his children Daniel and Sarah, and his grandsons Max and Asher.
