Valley Stream North H.S. student tests positive for coronavirus, district says

A student at Valley Stream North High School has tested positive for the coronavirus, Central High School District Schools Superintendent Dr. Bill Heidenreich announced on Friday in a letter to the school community.

The student had attended school for one day — Sept. 3, the first day of the school year — and only individuals who came in direct contact with the student without safety precautions such as social distancing and a mask will be required to self-quarantine, Heidenreich said. It is the first student in Valley Stream reported to have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of school this year.

As per district coronavirus procedures, the student will not be allowed to return to school for at least 14 days, or after the student’s family provides a negative coronvirus test result to the district, Heidenreich said.

Additionally, the Nassau County Department of Health will conduct a contact-tracing investigation, reaching out to anyone who may have had close contact with the student. The department has not recommended the high school be closed. The building, however, will undergo an additional round of deep cleaning during the weekend.

Valley Stream's Central High School District has adopted a hybrid model of instruction in which the student body is broken up into two groups, which alternate between days spent in the classroom and learning remotely from home. Students in the district also have a full remote learning option.

In-person classes at North are scheduled to resume as planned on Monday, according to the letter.
