A South High School staff member has tested positive for coronavirus, according to an announcement on Friday by Schools Superintendent Dr. Bill Heidenreich.

According to a letter posted to the district’s website and sent out to parents, the county Department of Health is investigating the case, and will contact any individuals who may have come in close contact with the staff member, who was not identified.

Schools statewide have been ordered closed until April 1 as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in New York continues to rise. It is the second confirmed case of coronavirus in the Central High School District. On March 12, the district announced a staff member at Memorial Junior High School had tested positive for the virus.

In addition to making the announcement, Heidenreich recommended district residents follow safe practices as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention such as:

— Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating.

— Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

— Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

— Stay home when you are sick.

— Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

— Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
