The Village of Rockville Centre announced the installation of six bike lockers for LIRR commuters on July 16. The lockers are located in Parking Field 5 behind the RVC Police Station.
Each locker, provided by the New York State Department of Transportation, easily fits a standard bicycle and helmet. To use a locker, a one-time $40 key deposit is required, in addition to a $60 lease. The key deposit is refunded at the end of the year.
“I think they should have more of them,” said Campion Quinn, a village resident. “Going to the train station, I commute every morning and there are a lot of bike thefts, and also there’s no place to put your helmet, so a bike locker would be excellent.”
Residents interested in obtaining a locker can contact the village at 678-9244.
“With gas prices at an all-time high, and likely to rise even more, residents can now pedal to the railroad and leave their bicycles in a safe, secure location before getting on the train,” said Mayor Francis X. Murray. “I think the lockers are a great addition to the village and provide our residents with a viable, healthy alternative getting to and from the railroad.”
