Enforcement and Removal Operations New York City apprehended 10 people in the United States illegally, including a 37-year-old Uniondale man, have been deported, federal government officials said.

According to court records, the man, who the government did not identify, has been convicted of attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance in 2005 and attempted robbery in 2004. He is a citizen of El Salvador and has been deported from the U.S. twice before.

Enforcement and Removal Operations is the principal federal law enforcement authority in charge of domestic immigration enforcement.

Non-citizens placed into removal proceedings receive their legal due process from federal immigration judges in the immigration courts, which are administered by the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review. Immigration judges in these courts make decisions based on the merits of each individual case. ERO officers carry out the removal decisions made by the federal immigration judges.

Nine other convicted criminals were caught in the May 1 to 4 sweep, including a 43-year-old El Salvadoran citizen reported to be living in Freeport. The others were from Central Islip, East Quogue, Huntington and St. James.

“This targeted enforcement operation is an example of ERO New York City’s commitment to locate, arrest and ultimately remove from the United States criminal non-citizens that pose a threat to public safety,” ERO New York City Field Office Director Kenneth Genalo stated in a news release. “Because of the dedication and professionalism of our officers, there are 10 fewer criminals in our Long Island communities.”
