Uniondale Union Free School District's Smith Street School scholars and staff recently held a memorial service for the victims of the May 24 Robb Elementary School mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Each scholar designed a yellow rose of solidarity that was placed in a display case honoring the victims of the shooting.

"Each class participated in this commemoration honoring the fallen of the horrific Uvalde mass shooting," said Principal Dr. Lynnda Nadien. "We chose yellow roses, which commonly represent friendship and happiness. The yellow roses are our way of demonstrating our solidarity with the families and community during this heartbreaking time."

Uniondale School District has grief counselors available at each school should any scholar need support during these challenging times. Uniondale's social workers have also prepared resources for parents to speak with their children about this tragedy at an age-appropriate level.

"The Uniondale community is grieving for those lost in this horrendous shooting," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. "Uniondale stands with the Robb Elementary School community, and we are devastated by this tragic news. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with the families of those lost and injured in this unspeakable tragedy."
