Wantagh High School and Wantagh Middle School were closed on Monday, Oct. 19 after the district was notified that a middle school student tested positive for Covid-19. A letter was sent out to parents alerting them of the situation. No students or instructional staff were allowed in the building on Monday.

The closure comes after MacArthur High School, in Wantagh, closed on Wednesday, Oct. 7, after four students tested positive for the virus. And Fairfield Elementary School, in nearby Massapequa, was forced to close on Oct. 15 and 16 and offer remote instruction, after three students tested positive for Covid-19.

The buildings were all closed to students and staff, and all districts enforced rules that students who contracted the virus had to provide proof of negative test results before returning to class. All students at Wantagh High School and Middle School followed a regular remote schedule on Monday.

According to a letter released by Wantagh Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara, the custodial staff will be conducting a thorough cleansing and disinfecting of the connecting high school and middle school. As at MacArthur and Massapequa, Wantagh will also carry out thorough contact tracing of the students.

The Wantagh District is working in collaboration with the Nassau County Department of Health to complete its contact tracing.

“As always, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our top priority,” wrote McNamara in his letter to the district.
