District 13 gets cameras, security vestibules

Indoor and outdoor cameras were installed on Sept. 25 in all School District 13 schools. The cameras give the district the ability to see down a hallway and use facial recognition, according to Andrea DiMango, the district’s director of technology.

She said at a Board of Education meeting that day that the Nassau County Police Department could also gain access to the cameras “when necessary and not at all times.” But before the integration could happen, Superintendent Constance Evelyn said, the district would need board approval.

Other security updates were installed before the school year began including scanning identification cards and installing a visitor management system.

Additionally, the district installed security vestibules and hired security guards. The vestibules, Evelyn said, would trap an intruder until a security guard can scans his or her license against an NCPD database before he or she enters the school building.

“Our public asked us to create an entrance that would force an individual to present us with their license before they entered a building, and now we have that capacity,” Evelyn said.
