Donald T. Scanlon, 74, was original member of Community Band

Donald T. Scanlon, a resident of Millbrook, N.Y. (Dutchess County), died on Sept. 18, 2010. He was 74.

Scanlon was born in Valley Stream, on April 26, 1936, and lived there until 2007, when he moved to Millbrook.

He attended Baldwin Wallace College and Columbia University where he received a master’s degree in music education. Scanlon taught music in the Valley Stream Central School District for 37 years. He was a founding member of the Valley Stream Community Band where he played the clarinet for more than 50 years. In addition, he played for the United States Military Academy Band where he marched in the inauguration parade for President John F. Kennedy.

On Nov. 23, 1961, Scanlon married the love of his life, Evelyn Gordon, who currently resides at home in Millbrook. Other survivors include son Michael Scanlon of Snowmass Village, Colo., son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Kathleen Scanlon of North Reading, Mass., and daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Patrick Murphy of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In addition, he is survived by six grandchildren, Ryan, Daniel, Kerri, Patrick, Colleen and Erin.

Scanlon enjoyed music, reading, theatre and other various cultural activities. He especially loved spending time in the lakes region and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, as well as peace hiking in the Presidential Range of New Hampshire and reading a good book while listening to the loons on Squam Lake. Scanlon enjoyed golfing and traveling to many U.S. state parks, as well as Alaska. He was a New York Yankees and New York Giants fan.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at St. Joseph’s Church in Millbrook.
