Green Acres Sears to close in April

The Sears at Green Acres Mall will close on April 27, according to a filing with the New York State Department of Labor.

Transform SR LLC, a holding company that purchased Sears’ assets in 2019 after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the previous year, filed the worker adjustment and retraining, or WARN, notice with the state on Jan. 28. The closure will affect 62 employees, including 48 in the store’s retail section and 14 at its auto center. The reason given for the closure was economic.

The closure leaves Massapequa as the retailer’s sole remaining location on Long Island.

The Green Acres Sears opened in October, 1983, according to news reports of the time. The 150,000-square-foot store was part of a 420,525-square-foot expansion of the mall, which made it the second largest mall on Long Island at the time.

The loss of Sears leaves Green Acres with its two Macy’s locations as its sole remaining anchor stores. In September, 2020 the Green Acres Century 21 closed after filing for bankruptcy. J.C. Penney, one of the mall’s original anchor stores upon its opening in 1956, closed in April last year and in April, 2019, the Green Acres Kohl’s closed its doors.

Representatives at Transform SR LLC or Macerich, the mall’s owner, could not be reached for comment.
