Jeffrey Greenfield reappointed to Nassau County planning commission

Rockville Centre resident Jeffrey Greenfield was reappointed to the Nassau County Planning Commission after telling legislators on Aug. 6 that he was unaware of county land purchases designed to benefit politically connected people.

Greenfield, a former chairman who has been a member of the commission since 2002, was reinstated on Aug. 6 by the legislature in an 11-8 vote. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran requested the motion.

Legislators questioned Greenfield at the Nassau County Legislative Chamber in Mineola about his knowledge of political patronage factoring into county land purchases. In 2014, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano’s administration unsuccessfully attempted to buy a property in Bethpage owned by former Deputy Parks Commissioner Frank Camerlengo for $800,000, Newsday reported.

Greenfield said it was not disclosed that Camerlengo was involved, because documents merely listed the proprietor as “LLC.” “I had no prior knowledge that the applicant was an employee of Nassau County,” he told the Herald.

The commission has made the county open space land purchasing process more transparent by requiring all the names of members of an LLC to be disclosed, he said, as well as if they are connected to the county.

He noted after the meeting that the disclosure requirements are the most extensive of any county agency. “As a result of that incident, we took a complete look of the disclosure issue,” he told legislators.

Greenfield said after the meeting that he looks forward to continue working for the county. “I’m very proud of my record,” he said. “I enjoy what I do.”
