Plans finalized for Oceanside High School graduation

Oceanside High School will hold graduation at Oceanside Park on July 21 during three separate time frames, according to a letter sent to families on Monday.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Phyllis Harrington announced the final plans nearly a week before the ceremony, after about two months of planning a safe, socially distant celebration for roughly 400 graduates.

“Many have worked incredibly hard to make this a memorable event for all,” Harrington wrote in the letter.

In a video update last week, Harrington also recognized the disappointment students may feel not sticking with tradition and graduating on the football field; however, the district hopes to remain as close to tradition as possible, she said.

Families will drive into parking spots and be able to sit next to them in lawn chairs to watch their child graduate. Students will be dropped off at the front and seated together. There will be speeches, and students will walk the stage to receive their diploma covers from Principal Geraldine De Carlo.

The ceremony will be amplified through a professional sound speaker, as well as streamed live via 89.3 FM radio station. A videographer will capture the event, which takes place at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Each graduate was assigned a time and sent specific guidelines to adhere to.
