Longtime Valley Streamer Sandra Deeple, who escaped Nazi Germany and served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, celebrated her 100th birthday on Sept. 14.

After fleeing to England, Deeple volunteered with the RAF and served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force Y-Service intelligence branch. After the war, Deeple and her husband, Ted, raised five daughters and became American citizens in the 1970s, moving to Valley Stream where she has lived for more than 40 years.

Deeple is known for her charity and love of animals, according to her family.

“To her family, Sandra is everything good,” they said in a statement. “She is defined by characteristics that we should all emulate: constant humility, deep intellect and curiosity, boundless strength and unwavering integrity.”

“We may have to remain socially-distant, but we can certainly still celebrate Sandra’s birthday with her — so have a bit of marzipan, dance away to big band music, and wish Sandra a happy birthday however you can.”
