Members of the Valley Stream South track and field team were honored by Mayor Ed Fare and the village board of trustees on March 11 for their showing at the 2019 state track and field championship held on Staten Island earlier this month.

Team members Lindsey Smith, De Anna Martin, Chibugo Obichere, Kaitlyn Ross, Allyson Camacho, Lauren Perkins and Evan Miller received village citations for their efforts in the contest, which brought home numerous titles while representing their high school.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” said Coach Nicole Bertrami. “ … [the athletes] work so hard, and we would not be here without the support of our community, our parents, coaches and our athletic director.”

“It’s phenomenal to see these athletes compete,” said South Athletic Director John Kostkowicz, and offered his congratulations.

Obichere and Martin took home All-State Honors in the 55-meter high hurdles, and 600-meter run respectively; Smith placed in the top 20 in the triple jump; Miller took home All-State Honors in the intersectional relay and Camacho, Ross, Perkins, Obichere, Martin and Smith placed 10th overall in the 4 by 400-meter relay.
