The New York State Department of Transportation unveiled a proposal to reconstruct the eastbound Exit 13 of the Southern State Parkway during a public meeting at Elmont High School, inviting residents to ask questions and voice concerns about the project.
The reconstruction plan includes a new single exit ramp providing access to both Central Avenue and Linden Boulevard, a rebuilt entrance ramp from Central Avenue to the eastbound Southern State Parkway, an upgraded traffic signal with pedestrian countdown timers, and improved sidewalks along Central Avenue between Stuart Avenue and Linden Boulevard.
According to the Department of Transportation, construction is expected to begin in spring 2027 and be completed by spring 2028.
During the May 8 meeting at Elmont High School, residents were able to walk through displays of the proposed plans, featuring detailed graphics of the affected roads. They also had the opportunity to speak directly with DOT officials to ask questions and offer feedback.
According to Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages, Exit 13, which borders the North Valley Stream and Elmont communities, has been a dangerous intersection for some time.
“There have been many accidents on this road, two fatalities, pedestrians being struck by cars, it is a very dangerous intersection,” Solages said. “This is long overdue. The people in the community have tolerated this for a long time, but now we have our first public information session where we're asking for the community's input on this, because we don't want to do this alone, we want to hear input.”
