Dementia driver causes three-car collision

A northbound driver suffering from dementia collided with two southbound vehicles while going the wrong way on the Wantagh State Parkway on Dec. 18 at 10:22 p.m., causing a three-car collision, according to the N.Y. State Police.

Burgess E. Moore, 82, of New Britain, Conn., who had been listed as missing, was driving a 2012 Subaru Legacy when he stuck Richard Hurwitz’s, 2007 Toyota Rav 4 in a head-on collision, according to the State Police report. Vincent Diaz, 20, of Levittown, stuck the rear of Hurwitz’s car while driving a 2003 Saturn Vue. Dennis Riley, 21 of Levittown, was seated in the front passenger seat of Diaz’s car.

Moore sustained injuries to the face as well as a broken hip. State police reported that he was transported to Nassau University Medical Center and is in critical condition. Hurwitz, 48, of Long Beach, was also transported to the medical center for neck and back pain. Diaz and Riley were examined for minor injuries.
