At 10:40 a.m. on May 14, the Wantagh Fire Department arrived on the scene of a house fire at 2445 Manchester Road in Wantagh.

Chief of Department Ken Kelly was first on the scene two minutes after the call was received. He reported a “signal 10” working fire in a garage attached to the two-storey home. Kelly observed the fire already spreading to the second floor. Power lines hanging near the garage were affected as well, so Kelly immediately contacted PSEG.

More Wantagh firefighters arrived at the scene promptly and Engine 694 hooked up to a nearby hydrant in order to attack the fire while Engine Company 5’s crew, led by Fire Lieutenant Ryan Johnston, stretched another hose line and bean attacking the second floor, where the fire had spread.

Ladder Company 1, led by Captain Bruce Sparke and Ladder Company 2, led by former Captain Jim Chirillo, conducted searches in the home. No reported injuries to civilians were reported. One firefighter was evaluated from the scene with undisclosed injuries, but refused further medical attention.

The main body of the fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes, but because the fire spread to the attic, the incident was not declared fully under control for another 25 minutes.

Seaford F.D. Ladder 3m, North Massapequa Ladder 661, Massapequa Engine 6315, East Meadow Engine 612, Levittown Ladder 621 and Massapequa Ambulance 6310 rendered mutual aid assistance.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
