Wantagh residents lined the streets for the annual Memorial Day Parade, honoring those who died in service to the United States. The event, organized by Wantagh American Legion Post 1273, is a longstanding tradition in the community.

The parade began at the corner of Wantagh and Beltagh avenues and proceeded south along Wantagh Avenue, ending at the American Legion post at 3484 Park Avenue.

Numerous community groups participated in the parade, which took place on May 26, including local fire and police departments, Girl and Boy Scout troops, the Kiwanis Club of Wantagh, the Wantagh High School marching band, the Miss Wantagh court, and other organizations.

“I’ve been coming to the Memorial Day Parade since before I could even walk, and it’s something I look forward to every year,” said Lilly Sloves, a Wantagh resident and Miss Wantagh 2022. “Coming home and seeing everyone gathered reminds me how special this town is and makes me proud to call it my home. It’s not just about tradition, it’s about honoring the people who gave everything for us. This parade brings us together to remember why this tradition matters.”

Following the parade, a memorial ceremony was held at the American Legion. Local officials delivered remarks, followed by a wreath-laying and a moment of silence in memory of fallen service members.

Winners of the Wantagh Middle School Memorial Day Essay Contest were also recognized during the ceremony. Students read their essays, sharing reflections on the meaning of Memorial Day. Honorees included eighth-grade winner Kate Stivali, seventh-grade winner Ava Sclafani, and sixth-grade winner Jonah Oppenheim.

The parade remains a central part of Wantagh’s observance of Memorial Day, offering residents an opportunity to come together in remembrance.
