Long Beach/Lido Little League cancels season

Citing too many obstacles amid the pandemic, the Long Beach/Lido Little League announced its 2020 season will not be played, with the exception of its 13- and 14-year-old age group competing in a district league.

Long Beach/Lido, which had 46 teams planned for this season, posted the following message on its website: “We regret to inform you that, due to the ongoing circumstances from the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to officially cancel our plans to play the 2020 season. We know how disappointing this decision may be. We had hoped to eventually play over the summer, however, the health and safety of our Little League community of players, coaches, umpires, parents, siblings, grandparents, and volunteers remains our primary concern and is more important than playing the games.”

Long Beach/Lido Little League President Andy Hayes, who was planning to coach both of his sons (12-year-old Matthew and 10-year-old Jonathan) this season, said any paid registrants can get a credit, refund or make a donation with their fees. He also said the league is exploring playing a fall season.

“We made the decision Fourth of July weekend,” Hayes said. “We just have that one group — two teams — playing against other teams in District 30. Some of the fields our league usually uses, like on school grounds, were not playable. Others we didn’t get permits for.”

For those choosing to be credited for the cancellation, their registration fee will be carried over to next season. Registrants not need to contact the league to receive the credit. This credit will be automatically issued and will be reflected in their online accounts. This credit will remain in the system and can be applied at the time of their next registration.

Refunds can be requested and will be paid by check since the league’s system does not allow for the processing of credit card refunds. Anyone wishing to donate their fees to the league, which is completely run by volunteers, can do so and will be provided a tax receipt. The league is a registered 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit.
