The Malverne and Lakeview fire departments responded to a garage fire in the early morning hours of August 13. The fire, which officials described as “significant,” decimated the garage and everything inside. Though the fire did not spread beyond the garage, the heat melted the siding of both neighboring homes. The departments responded at 2:07 a.m. and got the fire under control in just over 20 minutes. The family who the garage belonged to was home at the time, but no one suffered injuries.
On August 19, Malverne firefighters extinguished a working car fire on Southern State Parkway. The fire, which happened between between exits 16 and 17, had mostly consumed the car. Under the command of Deputy Chief Anthony Buonomo, firefighters responded to the scene at 1:11 p.m. and had the emergency under control within half an hour. The driver was able to escape the vehicle after seeing smoke and flames in the engine compartment, and no injuries were reported.
