Malverne Cub Scouts Pack 24 took part in a cleanup at Tanglewood Preserve in Rockville Centre on April 13. The cleanup, which lasted for three hours, was held as a conversation day for the scouts to raise awareness on the importance of keeping their community and parks clean. Twenty-two cub scouts from kindergarten through fourth grade along with 18 adults teamed up to collect roughly 70 lbs. of garbage, which comprised of plastic bottles, broken glass socks and soda cans.
Pack 24 chairman Zeeshan Humayun said that both the scouts and adults that assisted them were surprised to see that trash had filled up the park. He also said that the Center for Science, Teaching and Learning director Dr. Ray Ann Havasy spoke to the scouts about the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
“Most of the people in our group didn’t realize that garbage can end up here,” Humayun said. “They were shocked to see that this hits so close to home.”
As a result, Humayun said that many of the parents agreed to utilize reusable bottles to reduce the use of plastic. In addition, the scouts also earned the Conservation Good Turn Award, which recognizes those who help to conserve wildlife, energy, forests, soil and water.
