Oceanside athletes sign letters of intent

Nine Oceanside student-athletes, including seven who missed playing their respective sport for the high school teams in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, inked their national letters of intent to compete at the next level and begin a new chapter in their lives.
Boys’ lacrosse standout Thomas Flavin (St. John’s University), softball star Courtney Murphy (Adelphi University), girls’ lacrosse leaders Mia Judd (Stetson University), Alexandra Dato (University of Scranton) and Bella Klemm (Molloy College), girls’ soccer talents Micaella Romagno (Adelphi) and Olivia Losurdo (Ursinus College), and baseball’s Zach Ducorsky (Cobleskill) and Zach Horowitz (Plattsburgh) made their commitments official.
Flavin is a five-year varsity lacrosse player who returns as the leading goal and assist producer for the Sailors, who are scheduled to begin the upcoming season in May of 2021. “He’s a tough two-way midfielder who will be the backbone of our offense,” coach Rob Blount said. “He’ll be a captain for both the lacrosse and football teams. In football, he’ll be one of the best two-way players in the conference.”
Murphy would have been one of the top softball players in Nassau County had Covid-19 not wiped out the 2020 season, coach Carlo Quagliata said. In 2019, the All-County shortstop, leadoff hitter and captain batted .400 and anchored the infield defense for the Class AA runners-up. “Courtney is the definition of a leader and teammate,” Quagliata said. “She’s our best offensive weapon and can play anywhere defensively.”
Defense is Judd’s specialty on the lacrosse field. She started every game as a freshman and sophomore for Oceanside and led the team in ground balls in 2019. “She’s a tall, athletic and physical defender who will be one of our captains,” coach Ralph Montera Jr. said.

Dato plays defense and midfield and brings plenty of speed and athleticism to the table. She helps spark the transition game, Montera Jr. said.
Klemm was a reserve attack in 2019 and primed to assume a larger role this upcoming season as a captain. She had her first varsity goal, two assists and nine draw wins as a sophomore. “She’s a fierce competitor and a playmaker,” Montera Jr. said.
A four-year varsity soccer player and projected captain, Romagno thrived as a center-midfielder in 2019 and earned All-Conference honors. She maintained a supporting role for the offense, chipping in 2 goals and 6 assists, while doing her part on the defensive side. She competes at the club level. “She’s just a strong all-around and unselfish player,” coach Mariana Winchester said.
Losurdo, also a club player, is coming off an injury shortened junior season at Oceanside after getting a taste of varsity soccer as a sophomore.
On the diamond, Ducorsky and Horowitz will join a long list of Oceanside baseball players under coach Mike Postilio’s watch to reach the collegiate field. They both played for the Sailors’ summer league team. Ducorsky is a left-handed pitcher/outfielder who does both well. Horowitz, a catcher, worked on his craft a lot during the offseason. “They both would’ve been key varsity contributors if they had a junior season,” Postilio said.
