Promoting inclusivity in Malverne, North Merrick

Community Mainstreaming Associates recently celebrated the opening of two new Nassau County group residential homes for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Malverne and North Merrick.

The group held a ribbon-cutting dedication at each house last month. Each group house is now home to six women.

Among the people to attend Malverne’s ribbon cutting included Malverne Mayor Keith Corbett, State Assemblywoman Judy Griffin, Village Trustee Tim Sullivan and Camp Anchor Director Mary Ann Hanson. At North Merrick, State Assemblyman David McDonough, The Rev. Peter Sarpong from neighboring Sacred Heart Church joined CMA Executive Director Eileen Egan, board members, families and friends to meet the residents and tour their new homes.

“The communities have been very welcoming, and the women residents have enjoyed making their house a home and exploring their new neighborhoods,” Egan said in a news release. “CMA work is focused mainly in Nassau County, and we are thrilled to be able to expand our support services further into the community for these women in the two new homes.”

Founded in 1974, the CMA is a Long Island-based nonprofit that provides individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with flexible and innovative services. CMA believes people should be defined by what they can do, not by what they can’t and is committed to maximizing each person’s potential to lead a fulfilling, purposeful life in the community by offering a full range of work, social, educational recreational opportunities.
