One day not long ago, Merokean Susan Saban was sitting in a holiday service at Temple Beth Am of Bellmore-Merrick. A mother of a child with developmental disabilities kept getting up to attend to the boy, who was disrupting the service. Saban’s heart sunk. She knows well the challenges faced by children with disabilities and their families. She is the assistant director of pupil personnel services in the Herricks School District, and is charged with providing services for children with special needs. more

By his own admission, Booker T. Gibson wasn’t the most athletic student at Mepham High School in Bellmore in the 1940s, so becoming popular at a school that placed a high value on success in sports –– in particular, in wrestling –– was no easy feat. But Gibson could play boogie-woogie piano, and at the time this highly rhythmic style of the blues ruled the airwaves. more

With the Bellmore-Merrick Bulldogs’ hopes of winning their first-ever Nassau County hockey championship sitting on the end of his stick in overtime against No. 2 Long Beach on Feb. 26, Mepham High School junior Jon Olson scored perhaps the biggest goal of his Bulldogs’ career — and that’s saying something, minutes earlier he had scored the game-tying goal with just 1:22 remaining in the third period. more
For the first time in Calhoun High School history, a track relay team has qualified for nationals. The sprint medley relay squad of Devon Bayer, Grace Moore, Cristin Rodriguez and Juliann Vizoso finished third at the national qualifying meet in New York City on Feb. 12 and will return to the city for the National Track & Field Championships on March 11. more
Calhoun High School senior Josh Aberman loves poetry, particularly the Beat Generation poetry produced by such luminaries as Allen Ginsberg. So, when Aberman was looking to do a fundraiser for the Economic Policy Institute as a senior project, he thought he might try an event aimed at writers. more

In the past, only Advanced Placement English students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District took the English Regents in January of 11th grade. The feeling was that they should be ready at that point to pass the exam with a high mark, giving them greater time to concentrate on the A.P. exam in May. more
While attending an ice hockey tournament in upstate Lake Placid in late January, Calhoun High School senior Austin McLoughlin sprung into action to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation after a player was struck in the head and suffered a seizure on the ice. more
