Bellmore-Merrick residents saw their water rates rise in January when the New York State Public Service Commission approved a three-year, 12.66 percent rate hike for Aqua New York, their water provider. The average customer's bill will rise from $593 to $643 this year, according to the PSC. When U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, a Democrat, heard from constituents about the rate hike, and a similar increase in December 2008 for towns in Westchester County, he and his staff began looking into Aqua New York and its parent company, Aqua America. more

Last Friday, I saw the flashing lights of a police car shining into our living room window. I looked out and saw a police officer and two other men who had gotten out of their cars, all trying to entice a large and frightened dog. I suspect they were trying to read his collar, which told us that he belonged to someone and could be far away from home. more

Following county Legislator Dave Denenberg's recent call for the creation of a public water district for southeastern Nassau, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray said on Monday that Hempstead and the Town of Oyster Bay had appointed a task force to pursue the reactivation of the dormant Southeastern Nassau County Water Authority, with the goal of reducing water rates for local residents. more
