Tzvi Lewisohn, a Calhoun High School senior, loves to win. Basketball, bowling, you name it, Lewisohn is a competitor. But, he is quick to note, more important than winning is sportsmanship. “We always congratulate the other teams,” Lewisohn, a member of Calhoun's Challenger bowling and basketball teams, says with a smile. “We don't want them to think we're out to win; we're just trying to have fun.” Of course, it doesn't hurt that both teams are undefeated for the past two years. They have not lost since the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District started the Challenger basketball league for special-education students with a handful of other Nassau County school districts in 2008. more
Three Mepham High School soccer players were recently awarded All-County and All-Conference honors, including Anthony Ippolito (All-County), Stephen Polimeni (All-Conference) and Anthony Duranona (All-Conference). Joining them at right was James Koester, the boys' varsity soccer coach. more
The Mepham High School varsity cheerleading squad recently placed second at the Universal Cheerleading Regionals. The win earned the team a bid to the UCA Nationals in Orlando, Fla. The team will be conducting fundraising for the trip in the near future. Hofstra University president Stuart Rabinowitz announced this morning that its Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to eliminate the school's football program and will reinvest those resources into new academic programs and need-based scholarships. more

Calhoun had been knocking on the door of a Nassau County Class A boys’ cross-country championship for the last three seasons, finishing each of those title meets as the runner-up. On Nov. 7, however, the Colts placed four runners among the top 15 at Bethpage State Park and outdistanced Port Washington by 21 points, 73-94, to finally take home the crown. more
Hofstra men’s basketball team was picked to finish sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) but if its Nov. 17 performance at Connecticut, where the Pride nearly upset the nationally ranked Big East power, is any indication, head coach Tom Pecora’s squad may make those preseason prognostications seem way off come March. more

Three minutes into the second 10-minute overtime, Hicksville’s Tim Parker broke the Colts’ hearts when he rose from a collision with defender Andrew Lief and with his back to the net, spun and grounded a hard shot past goalkeeper James Raheb to give the Comets a 2-1 victory and their first county title since 1989. more
Boosters to hold annual fund drive On Saturday, Nov. 21, the Calhoun High School Sports Boosters will hold their annual fund drive beginning at 10:30 a.m. All those who would like to participate should meet in Calhoun's west cafeteria starting at 9:30 a.m., where a bagel breakfast will be served. All students, parents and teachers are welcome and needed to make this event successful. The boosters ask the community to continue its upport for students by donating to this fund drive. Checks can be made payable to "Calhoun Sports Boosters" and are preferred, but cash is also welcome. Return envelopes will be left for mail-in donations for those who are not at home. Throughout the year, the Sports Boosters sponsor various events, including Homecoming, pep rally, parade, Battle of the Classes and Spring Fling. Boosters also donate to community and district events, including the "Midnight Madness" post-prom party for senior students. Calhoun Sports Boosters is there to support students in any way that it can, and to promote sportsmanship, school spirit and good will throughout the community.
